Wrist Lyre
Item #: JSM 2051

This is indeed a strange item--a wrist lyre for a marching bandsman. I am not sure which instrument this was designed for. It seems designated for the left wrist which indicates an instrument for which the left arm remains relatively motionless and is set close to the mid-to upper torso area. This could be used with several different horns. The lyre is brass with a stout leather strap fastened by a common roller buckle. The base of the lyre is riveted to the strap. The numeral 4 is stamped on both ends of the base and the maker's name, "Hawkes & Son" is also stamped into the base in small letters. The lyre measures 3 1/2" from base to top. Interesting and rare 19th century marching band item.
