These small non-regulation cast brass pins have longed been sought by relic hunters and collectors. Some were copied for branch of service, corps affiliation, or for special services. Some were made as busts of famous generals.
They were used as cape closures, watch fobs, or simply decorative military devices. They were sold with a small length of brass chain with a clasp of sorts to attach to pocket watch, coat button, and the like. This star and crescent may have served as a Federal 7th corps badge.
Although the star and crescent motif was affiliated with several Southern states, principally Louisiana, this was a private purchase piece sold to Union officers and troops by sutlers and jewelers. This one was excavated in central Virginia. It measures 15/16" x 15/16".
