This rare kepi with original oilcloth cover is believed to be circa 1860 and is considered to be Virginia or Alabama militia according to one authority, R.E. Neville, who examined the piece several years ago. The chin strap buttons are Scovill-made US eagle buttons, wool is dark blue. Chin strap is missing. Cloth is excellent as it has been protected over the years by the cover. The brown leather sweatband is 1 1/2" and the lining is black silk of the style that pre-dated the drawstring configuration. The brim is attached but the stitching is loose on the ends. The oilcloth is very good with only two small breaks on each rear side from wear. This is an excellent and extremely rare piece of Civil War headgear!
