Josiah H.D. Wigle hailed from Pennsylvania and enlisted at 26 years of age on Sep. 6, 1862 with the rank of sergeant. he was mustered into Co. C, 14th Penn. Cav. He was discharged on May 30, 1865 having participated in scores of battles and skirmishes resulting in at least one recorded wounding.
He most likely bought his ring and had it engraved during the final weeks of service after the close of war. Wigle was a farmer and returned to Westmoreland County, married, raised a family, and farmed. He died in 1924. His simple silver ring bears his name, unit, and muster out year engraved in the side. He obviously prized the ring as it reveals wear. The overhead view shows a slight bending typical of an untouched artifact of this rarity. The ring is accompanied by his service record and full report by Rossbacher, including copies of documents, death notice, etc. and a color image of his tombstone.
