Antebellum Pewter Warming Plate
Item #: jsm 17

Pewter warming plates were quite popular with Civil War officers in the early days of the war. Filled with boiling water they would keep a plate of food warm in the coldest conditions. This one is particularly nice for size (9 1/2") and condition (fine uncleaned and undamaged.) Only several minor dents and nice patina. It is well marked by the maker James Dixon & Sons Sheffield (England.) It dates from the 1850s and would be a great addition to a display of an officer s winter camp scene or mess gear collection. Typical of the sort of superfluous and eclectic material from the innocent early days of the war!
