Smith & Wesson has been known for quality firearms since their inception before the Civil War. This handgun enjoyed great popularity with soldiers, civilians, and lawmen for years. It was popular with Federal army officers during he Civil War due to its reliability, light weight, and modern features. Many famous soldiers and gunmen preferred S & W firearms. Gen. George A. Custer owned a pair and Wild Bill Hickok was carrying one when he was murdered in Deadwood.
This specimen is a five-shot, 32. caliber metallic cartridge, rimfire, with 6-inch octagon barrel. Matching assembly number "8" may be found on frame, cylinder, and barrel. Approximately 75% of the original blue remains on cylinder and frame. Bore is good, markings on all correct parts are legible and clear. Functions as it did when new.
Serial number is 14486 which indicates mid-war manufacture practically assuring wartime use. Rosewood grips are good with "5240" stamped on obverse grip inside and original varnish is still intact. Minimum blemishes overall. The weapon is accompanied by a leather holster original to this gun. At some point in its later years the holster was strengthened with 3 rivets to support the single belt loop. Fine condition overall.
