Here is a beautiful Miss cuff I button bearing backmark of Hyde & Goodrich. This was from the 1860 H & G order to Scovill. The button was gilded with prominent star bearing letter "I" and "Mississippi" nearly surrounding the star. At the 6:00 o'clock position is a small dot between the first and last letters of the state name.
This button was recovered from the winter camp of the 48th Mississippi Infantry Regiment near Fredericksburg, Virginia. The regiment was organized at Fredericksburg in November 1862 drawn from the 2nd Miss. Inf. Battalion to form its nucleus. Most of its men were from Claiborne, Jackson, Yalobush, and Warren Counties. They served with distinction in every major battle of the Army of Northern Virginia from Fredericksburg to Appomattox.
This is a beautiful relic from the earliest origins of the 48th Miss several weeks before their first battle at Fredericksburg.
