Solid cast brass "Richmond" spur made at the Tredegar Arsenal in the capitol of the Confederacy. It has been categorized as CS 1 by Howard Crouch and his successor, Bob Baird. Crouch wrote collectors consider this the "CS ordnance spur." Baird's study offers even far greater detail concerning this exceptional artifact.
Most CS 1 spurs exhibit the same reddish copper content brass found in CS two piece belt plates made by Tredegar. Most also exhibit the crude sandstone grinding wheel finishing and file marks. This example also retains sharp ragged mold sprues, noted in closeup, from hasty casting and finishing that should have been filed off. Such crude finishing wore out the leather attachment straps very quickly which accounts for so many being lost on the battlefield.
This example was recovered from Brandy Station battlefield in Culpeper County, Virginia, and exhibits the green tinted patina resulting from the highly mineralized soil of the area. No breaks or repairs. As usual, the iron rowel is long gone.
