Engineer Officer's Hat Insignia
Item #: FD 12

Officers enjoyed greater latitude than enlistedmen with regard to to uniform, headgear, weapons, insignia, buttons, and such. This particular relic is a example of such. The standard headgear insignia for US engineers was the stamped brass turreted castle measuring 1 7/8" at the base by 1 1/4" high. Officers were allowed the same castle motif on private purchase belt plates and headgear. The tiny brass headgear castle was sometimes enclosed within an embroidered wreath adding distinctive rank status and flash. Some used only the tiny castle by itself. This relic measures only 16 x 22mm--it could practically be concealed behind a silver US quarter. The reverse shows two brass wires heavily soldered onto the brass whcih were originally loops. But one side of each loop was pulled free of the solder to use as straight wires perhaps for ease in removing for polishing or switching from one cap to another. Very nice relic.
