5th Corps Equine Chest Strap Heart
Item #: FD 55
Click on an image to enlarge
This decorative plate was designed for the horse's chest strap and was positioned below the horse's neck at the mid-point of the chest. The motif was generally heart-shaped though it bears no similarity to the shape of an actual heart. This military equine chest strap plate with the American eagle dates to approximately 1812. It evolved over the years and the style here originated before the Civil War.

It was made of a stamped rolled brass face, lead filled reverse with three brass wires for affixing to the leather strap. It measures 70mm x 76mm. It is commonly, but erroneously called a "martingale" due to its use an as an adornment for the leather martingale tack. This was a private purchase piece worn on officer's mounts. This one has a small Maltese Cross scratched into the lead backing indicating 5th Corps affiliation. It is exceptionally rare to find one in this superb condition and the first I've seen with such a carving. Fantastic!
