Noted Virginia relic hunter Dave Vander Haeghe found a South Carolina winter camp near his home in Spotsylvania, Virginia, years ago and found a trove of early war relics. The site had been occupied during the fall and winter of 1862-1863.
This trio of two clipped corner pre-war style militia plates and one sash buckle were once displayed with SC buttons and other relics. Both clipped corner sheet brass plates are missing their attachment hooks, as most are, but the solder scars on the reverse remain showing where the small brass wires were originally fastened. The sash buckle, while intact, was damaged and repaired.
These were from the winter camp of the 48th Miss. Inf. Reg. that was organized in November 1862 just before the unit's first engagement. The new regiment was drawn from the 2nd Miss Inf. Battalion which was composed of early militia units from Mississippi. Dave recovered plain star Miss. Militia buttons and other pre-war and obsolete relics associated with low numbered early volunteers. Great group of Magnolia State artifacts!
