This design of US headgear insignia for cavalry was introduced in 1858. It was die-struck brass, 3 1/2 inches wide, with four small brass wire loops soldered on the reverse on each corner portion of the device for affixing via thread to the cap. The soldered junctions were the weakest joins and they often broke at these points. Considering the rigorous use of headgear in the field this is not surprising. This example was recovered in central Virginia and is missing all four loops. The solder scars from each are still visible.
