This is
a super fine example of an original coat size 33mm hard rubber Confederate Navy
button. According to records this is the type intended for issue sailors of
the C.S.S. Texas.The vessel carrying
these to the Confederate States was intercepted and contents sold by the British.
The
button has the anchor entwined with crossed cannons. Beneath the motif are the letters
"CN" for Confederate Navy. The edge of the button is done in the rope
border design.This button pattern
copied the US navy style of Goodyear’s patent. It has an excellent look that
gives it a superb display.
The
backmark of the Confederate model bears "COURTNEY & TENNENT .
CHARLESTON. S. C./ MANTON'S PATENT" with a delicate swan above the eyelets.
This is listed as CS60 in Alphaeus Albert's pioneer button book and CSN222A1 in
Tice's fine study. This is a beautiful original Confederate coat size navy
button.
