Classic Confederate issue tin drum canteen 5 7/8" x 1 1/2" of tin body, spout, and sling loops all connected by solder. The CS tin drum canteens were manufactured in a variety of sizes and variations of construction. This example is missing its bottom sling loop which would not have impaired its use. It bears a hand rendered cursive inscription in three lines across one face, "Salmon C. Rodgers / Kingston / Ohio." This may have been done to ship home from the field via the Sanitary Commission or simply to identify as Rodgers' property. Rodgers served briefly with the 155th Ohio Infantry with the Army of the James in 1864 and this was a trophy of his service in Virginia. Rodgers service record accompanies this fine relic.
