In 1867 Capt. Anson Mills of the 10th Cavalry designed one of the first effective military cartridge belts. Ten years later in designed the cloth cartridge belt with woven loops for cartridges that grew to popularity. Soon after that he designed the H-style US brass belt plate to be worn with his belt. The belt and plates were issued for a number of years and saw use during the Spanish American War. The plates and belts were also made for state militias and bore state abbreviations on the plate's face instead of US. This one, for New York militia, bears the patent dates stamped into the belt adjuster. The belt saw a lot of use and has a few worn spots, but is intact and displays quite well. Once common, the Mills belts are being absorbed by the SAW collectors with increasing rapidity.
