This is a very good display item. Carpetbags were extremely popular in the mid-19th century. Many officers of both sides used these practical and lightweight forms of luggage for personal items and smalls. This one is satchel sized at 15 1/2" x 19 1/2" high. The interior is lined with a small sewn pocket. The flap closed via two leather tabs that buttoned with bone buttons. The leather tabs have both split but are intact. There is a loop on the reverse for suspending from a hook, etc. The loop is partly worn through but still intact. The bag is edged with hand-sewn leather trim unlike most post-war era bags which exhibit machine sewing. The leather has cracked in several places but is in overall excellent shape. The interior has a stencil bearing the name Michael Quinn and other information, the meaning of which is uncertain. It may refer to railroad identification. Overall condition of the bag is excellent with only minor wear in the body. In any case, it is of the period and type used during the war and would add just the right touch to any officer's display.
