Here is a very nice 1/9th plate ruby ambrotype of a Confederate enlistedman wearing a western style CS waist belt plate! This is rarely seen in Confederate images. The entire plate is there but partially obscured by the brass frame. Case is good except for a small section of the bottom cover edge that was chipped off. On the inside of the case behind the image is the Littlefield, Parsons & Co. paper ad. Pencilled very lightly above the text in two lines is the soldier's name--almost illegible--and unit "La Artillery 1861." The soldier's initials are J. W. and a previous owner believed it to be John Weir, 1st La. Heavy Arty. However, another image exists that is attributed to Weir and they are not the same man. In any case, he is a Louisiana artilleryman and perhaps a black light can reveal his full name.
