This is a beautiful Mississippi cuff button with Hyde & Goodrich backmark. Produced by Scovill, the premier button maker of the era, Hyde & Goodrich purchased buttons from Scovill by the thousands for supplying its state troops in 1860.

This was unearthed from the winter camp of the 48th Mississippi Infantry Regiment near Fredericksburg, Virginia. The regiment was organized there in November 1862 drawn from the 2nd Miss. Inf. Battalion. The regiment's first battle was several weeks later at Fredericksburg where Lee defeated Burnside's heroic but doomed assault.

The regiment fought with valor at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and all of Lee's battles through to the surrender at Appomattox.
