The pinfire bullet was a self-contained brass cartridge that used the
tiny projected "pin" to ignite the priming compound in the base to
initiate the firing process. Invented by the French firearms inventor
Casimir Lefaucheux in 1832, the design became popular in the early 1850s
due to its reliability in damp or wet weather conditions. It faded
after the development of the rimfire and centerfire cartridges. This
example in 12mm was used with Lefaucheux's revolver. Its base is stamped
"H B" and "Paris" (Houllier and Blanchard of Paris, France.)
