Eley Brothers (Charles and William) opened for business in 1828 in London, England. They manufactured and sold cartridges worldwide for decades. They were an award-winning company eventually selling ammunition of many kinds to more than 90 countries.

One of their distinctive products was the 12 gauge pinfire shotgun shell. This group of 14 unfired shells were found in a 3rd Corps Union camp in Culpeper, Virginia, near Barndy Station. They bear the headstamp "Eley Bros London", and numerals "12" on the brass bases. Remains of the paper hulls are visible on several sides and interiors of the bases.

A pinfire shotgun was not a weapon carried by an enlistedman, but was more likely a hunting weapon owned by a Union officer or a vicious firearm wielded by a Confederate cavalryman. The cardboard box of cartridges was perhaps damaged by moisture and intentionally discarded or dropped from horseback in battle. An interesting and unique field recovery to titillate the imagination.
