Early relic hunter, collector, and Northern Virginia Relic Hunter's Association member Don London assembled this relic case in the 1990s. The only Vermont cavalry regiment to participate in Gen. Phil Sheridan's Shenandoah Valley Campaign was the 1st Vermont. This regiment fought in 76 engagements from 1861 to 1865 including Gettysburg, the Overland Campaign, Petersburg, and Appomattox. One of those 1st Vermont cavalrymen left this button on the battlefield at the fight at the Double Toll Gate on August 11, 1864. It was unearthed on the 126th anniversary of the Confederate victory along with a fired Spencer carbine casing and lovingly assembled in this small display case. The button bears a D. Evans backmark and is in beautiful condition. A great relic of a courageous unit and a cavalry battle in the Shenandoah Valley.
