Rare Model 1850 Ames staff & field officer's sword dated 1862. It is one of only 119 furnished the government from Ames Sword Company that were inspected and dated 1862. Although 1,800 were ordered by the government in 1861 only 59 were delivered in 1861 and 119 the following year. Both blade and scabbard bear Ames' distinctive maker's stamps. The blade is 32" with excellent etching and original frosting remaining intact. The inspector was L. Dustin, an armory sub-inspector. The sword basket bears letters "US" signifying a ranking officer and Ames was the Cadillac of American swords manufactured domestically during the war. The original sharkskin grip is intact along with the double twist brass wire holding it to the grip but the sharkskin reveals a crack on the reverse often seen with these. The high polish of the brass hilt and furniture has been maintained and the overall condition and appearance of this rare sword and scabbard is stunning.
