This ambrotype shows two 19-year-old soldiers in their state militia uniforms. Behind the image was a slip of aged paper identifying the two soldiers. At left is John E. Whiting of Pepperell, Mass. He enlisted on Oct. 7, 1861, and mustered into Co. C, 26th Mass. Inf. He later served in the 6th Mass Inf. Mustered out Oct. 27, 1864. His Mass buttons appear to be Albert's MS 27 or 30.
Charles H. Chandler of Cambridge, Mass, enlisted on April 16, 1861, and was mustered into Co. D, 6th Mass. Inf. Three days later he was wounded when his regiment was attacked on the streets of Baltimore, Maryland, while enroute to Washington, D.C. He recovered and served with the 26th Mass and the 33rd Mass. He was discharged for "disability" on Sept. 9, 1862. The buttons on his coat are the more commonly encountered Albert's MS 35 or 36. This is the only photo I've seen of one of the casualties of the famous attack on the 6th Mass. in April 1861, in the streets of Baltimore, Maryland.
The patriotic motif case is intact. The ambro is dark but clearly visible. The photographer's backdrop appears to be a battle scene. Fantastic image overall.
