Early-war silver-plated pewter identification disc worn by William Devaney, a 32-year old who enlisted with the rank of corporal in New York City, April, 13, 1861, in Co. K, 72nd, NY Infantry. This was one of five regiments recruited by former US Congressman Daniel Sickles as part of the famous Excelsior Brigade. The unit fought from the Siege of Yorktown in May 1862 through the Peninsula Campaign, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, and the Siege of Petersburg. In all, the 72nd fought in two dozen major battles and countless skirmishes.
The regiment suffered 238 enlisted men and 12 officers who died in service. The relic was excavated in their winter quarters (1863-1864) near Brandy Station, Virginia. The badge bears the first 8 battles that Devaney participated in during 1862 alone. A fantastic relic from a courageous son of Erin who fought for the Union and survived the war. A copy of his service record accompanies the relic.
