In 1838 Lieut. Robert E. Lee was stationed in St Louis working on improvements to the harbor as a US army engineer. He rented a house for him and his family that was owned by William Lewis of Lewis & Clark fame This receipt bears Lee's bold signature attesting to having taken receipt of lumber and other materiels from "A. Carr." The watermarked document is two-sided and, well mounted, double-glassed, matted, and framed. A fine document of the 31-year-old topographical engineer who was destined for fame. the piece is augmented with information about Archibald Carr who hailed from Lee's state of Virginia.
