US Model 1841 naval cutlass with 21-inch blade was manufactured by the N. P. Ames Co. between 1841-1846. The maker's mark and date on the obverse and reverse of the ricasso have long since been worn off by years of polishing, sheathing and unsheathing, and seafaring weather. Even the US eagle motifs on each side of the pommel give evidence of long use. There are several different rack numbers marked into the guard to designate its assigned placement aboard ship.
This example reveals four different numerals from the four ships it was carried on. There is a small hole drilled into the top of the guard for a lanyard. Both the US Model 1841 naval cutlass and the Model 1832 foot artillery
sword evoked the style of the wide bladed short swords of the Roman
gladiators. Double-edged, center raised spine and sturdy guards. Ames made only 6,600 of these. Few have survived.
