BG & M Confederate Artillery Short Sword
Item #: 189
Click on an image to enlarge
The Richmond, Virginia, firm of Boyle, Gamble & McFee produced a variety of regulation edged weapons for the Confederate government. Their artillery short sword copied the US Model 1832 which was itself aping the French model which, in turn, was inspired by the ancient Roman gladius. By 1861 these short, heavy swords served little purpose but that of a fascine knife for clearing brush and bushes for artillery battery placement. This product of BG & M is simply constructed and unmarked. Its maker was unknown to collectors for many years. This particular example conforms to the firm's strictures with a one-piece cast brass hilt, flat cross guard with 19-rib grip. The 18 1/4" blade has a 9" unstopped fuller. It reveals hard use and long exposure to the elements. Its original leather scabbard disappeared likely about the time the weapon itself was discarded in the field. Overall length is approximately 23 5/8" long. Recovered from a site occupied by artillery with the Army of Northern Virginia.
