Col. Leon J. Fremaux, one of New Orleans' most colorful 19th century characters, started his military career as a Captain of Co. A, 8th Louisiana Regiment. He went to Virginia and served with the "Tigers" until joining Gen. Beauregard's staff as a topographical engineer. In this role he laid out the defenses of Port Hudson. After the war, Col. Fremaux assisted in designing the plans for the city of Slidell, Louisiana, and is recognized as a founding father of the city. To many Americans, Fremaux is best known as an artist. Listed in Who's Who of America's top 100 artists Fremaux was noted for his rendidtions of New Orleans street vendors, war-time sketches of Lousiana Tigers in Virginia, and popular and famous people of the 19th century. This fantastic group includes his original framed sketch of Sitting Bull (10" x 12 framed), his enameled silver Confederate veteran's pin with name and rank inscribed on reverse (1 1/4" diameter), and the finest carved Confederate smoking pipe I've ever seen (9" long.) Fremaux carved the pipe; his expertise as a sculptor and engraver is well-documentd. The pipe contains a magnificent rendering of the Louisiana Pelican motif, the famed "Tiger," letter 8 for his regiment, and A for his company, the Letters "A P" and "R D" on either side of the bowl. I believe AP stands for Asuncion Parrish, where Fremaux lived, and the letters RD are perhaps French or Catholic, a reference still speculative. This is a great price for a fabulous group!
