The CSA accoutrement waist belt plate is the classic Confederate enlistedman’s plate. Made of sand cast brass with three integrally cast attachment hooks on the reverse, this regulation Confederate army plate was produced across the South. There are two primary variations—the "Atlanta Arsenal” style and the "Virginia” style. This is an example of the Virginia style measuring 48 x 71mm with overall thinner and flatter body, and pronounced bump(s) on the face opposite one or more of the hooks. (This is believed caused by bending the hooks over in the finishing process.) This particular plate reveals crude casting, a poor mold, and flaws on the left edge of the plate—wonderful examples of hasty and desperate Southern manufacturing procedures. This plate was unearthed near Orange, Virginia, by relic hunter Danny McLaughlin in October 2016. It is featured in Vol. 40 No. 1 of North South Trader’s Civil War magazine. Photos, Steve Sylvia.
