This is a very nice Model 1872 staff officer's kepi by the Boston, Massachusetts firm of Bent & Bush.  The firm made thousands of caps under contract to the US army during the Civil War and continued for years following.  Their company history dates to the 1820s.  As experienced Civil War hat makers their post-war caps evoke certain similarities to their war-time counterparts in quality, materials, and construction.  The cap is 2" tall in front with the rear of the crown standing 4" high.  The chinstrap buttons are three-piece staff officer's buttons by Horstmann.  Overall condition is excellent.  A wonderful example of an Indian War era officer's cap that looks very similar to many Civil War examples.
