Metal helmets had been popular in the Middle Ages but were a new innovation to armies at the dawn of the 20th century. It is small wonder that soldiers of all armies preserved helmets that saved their lives while leaving an obvious scar from the impact of a bullet or piece of shrapnel. The soldier whose life was preserved by this helmet carried it home as the ultimate souvenir. I expect his ears rung for a while.
