This is the coolest US Navy headgear I've ever owned! It is of the Span-Am War period and is hand embroidered on the top. This practise is common in the US Navy. (I have my Dad's Navy tailor-mades from WW 11 with Oriental style multi-colored dragons and such embroidered on the inside flap of the trousers and underside flap of the collar. Interesting tradition.) Hat is all wool with a red silk lining. The sailor who owned this hat was quite a dandy. Lining is quite distressed due to wear. The embroidery has held up quite well. The back of the headband has a slight separation--possibly done during the hat's active service for better fit, but nothing is missing and could be easily restored with a couple of stitches. Beautiful relic of a colorful era in America's military history!
