The 79th New York Highlanders were a colorful regiment of soldiers of Scottish descent. They were formed in 1859 and were outfitted in plaid kilts, cutaway kilt jackets trimmed in red and white, and the distinctive cap shown here. Later they dispensed with the kilts in favor of plaid trousers. The regiment proved to be a tough and brave outfit who participated in many of the eastern theatre's toughest fights. They remained in service after the war as a New York militia unit. This cap is of the post-war period and is nearly identical to the type worn by the outfit during the war. The interior construction rveals it to be 1870s era. The stamped brass pin decorating the side of the cap is the same as that used during the war. The wool hat is in excellent condition with no mothing or damage to speak of. The silk ribbon is likewise intact as is the lining. The 79th was honored to participate in Grant's funeral. Nice piece with great regimental affiliation.
